Dmitry Medvedev was elected as Russia’s next president, early results showed on Sunday, after a vote that will preserve the power of his mentor President Vladimir Putin but which opponents said was unfair.

Medvedev, a 42-year-old former lawyer who has worked at Putin’s side since the 1990s, will take over the trappings of the presidency from his patron in May but it was still unclear which of the two men would really be in charge.

Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister has accused the United States of inciting instability in Europe by backing Kosovo’s independence.

“The US is putting Europe in a very difficult position by supporting Kosovo, it is far away and is not facing any risks, but Europe could go ablaze”, First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said Wednesday in a campaign speech in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod.

Medvedev who is likely to become Russia’s next president also said that Kosovo’s independence has “jeopardized security and stability of the whole region.’’

VOA News - OSCE Will Not Monitor Russia's Presidential Election

Europe’s largest vote-monitoring organization says it is cancelling plans to monitor Russia’s upcoming presidential election because of restrictions Moscow has placed on its observers.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe says it has made “every effort in good faith” to assemble a team to monitor Russia’s presidential vote on March 2. However, an OSCE spokesman says Moscow imposed unacceptable limitations on the size and duration of the mission.

MOSCOW, Feb. 29 (Xinhua) — Russian voters are expected to cast their ballots in a presidential election on Sunday to choose a successor to President Vladimir Putin, who will step down after eight years in office.

Four candidates will compete in the upcoming elections. They are Dmitry Medvedev, endorsed by Putin, Gennady Zyuganov, nominated by the Communist Party, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, nominated by the Liberal Democratic Party and Andrei Bogdanov, an independent candidate and leader of the Democratic Party.
